Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” -Genesis 22:10-12 NASB
It’s interesting to read the verse for today, because you think that God would never ask you to do that. However, there are times that God asks you to give, or give up something to see if you will put Him before your desires.
Do you practice the principle of the first, which is all about giving God your best and trusting Him to fulfill and supply the rest?
When God called Abraham to give up his one and only son, you can bet that Abraham really questioned God and His motives. It’s okay to ask God why and to tell Him when you don’t understand His methods or reasoning. God doesn’t mind the questions, but He does require obedience, regardless of your understanding.
Is there something in your life that you feel God is calling you toward? Is there something that you need Him to do in your life—something that is so huge or so bold that it would have to involve the hand of God to accomplish it?
Spend some time and ask God what it is that you need to give or surrender so that you may hear from Him and have Him move drastically in your life. Maybe He’s already been calling you to put down or lay aside something to move you closer to Himself. Do you trust Him enough to do what He’s asked?
- Pray for courage to trust God when He calls you for His purposes.
- Pray God will help you to put your trust above your understanding.
