As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
–Proverbs 27:17 NLT
Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.
–Proverbs 13:20 NLT
If you want to run a marathon, spend time with runners. Makes sense, right? And yet often we don’t do it. We spend time with people we enjoy, but aren’t necessarily on the same path. It may seem that our daily lunch companion or Sunday football buddies don’t impact our lives in any meaningful way. Yet nothing could be further from the truth.
The attitudes, ideals, and moral compass of those we spend time with impact us at every turn. Yes, the Lord commissioned us to go into all the world and share the good news of Jesus Christ, but He also cautioned us to select our friends wisely. A 2012 study in Psychological Science showed that people running low on self-esteem increased their will power when they sought out self-disciplined people.
Consider your life direction—the person you aspire to be emotionally, physically, and spiritually—and spend time with those whose goals and outlook are similar. If we choose wisely, we will reap the benefits!
- Lord, help me to make wise choices in my attitude and direction.
- Give me direction and courage to spend time with those who are seeking You.
