Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. -Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Complaining is a way of expressing annoyance about someone or something: Your job, a slow waiter, the neighbor’s children, your spouse, an expensive bill, working out, school work, the unfriendly cashier, etc. But why complain? It only brings harm to yourself and those around you. While many know this fact it is still a hard habit to break; however, you have the power to overcome your tendency to complain!
What is the attitude of your heart? When you find yourself speaking negatively, begin speaking the opposite. Proverbs 18:21 says that death and life are in the power of the tongue. You have power in the words you speak! Even if it feels unnatural at first begin speaking positively and you will form a thankful heart.
What are you taking in? There is a lot of junk in this world. If you spend too much time hanging around a bad crowd, watching gossip TV shows, or listening to crude music you might begin to reflect this negativity in your attitude. Fill your mind with wisdom by learning more about the God you serve through the reading of His word, surround yourself with Christian friends who will challenge your thinking, and spend time daily in praise and worship.
Jesus came so you can have life to the fullest. (John 10:10) Don’t let complaining rob you of your joy.
- Thank God that He can change your heart and your words to reflect His grace.
- Ask God to give you the strength to choose thanksgiving over complaints.
