I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—For kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior.
-1 Timothy 2:1-3 (NIV)
Today, President-Elect, Donald Trump becomes the 45th President of the United States in what was the most polarizing election in modern history.
Regardless of who sits in the Oval Office, Jesus is King. There may be debates about whether presidents and other elected officials are operating with the mind of Christ but the Bible makes it clear that any nation that keeps their eyes fixed on Him will prosper. Psalm 33:12 says, Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance (NIV).
If we’re not careful, the focus on politics may lead to thoughts and conversations that go against what God commands.
Romans 13:1 says, Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God (ESV). The Bible doesn’t say that you have to agree with our nation’s leaders but it does command you to pray, intercede, and give thanks for those in authority.
And as you think of the political discussions you have with others, remember John 13:34-35. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (ESV). Ask God if the words you speak and conversations you engage in are conversations that glorify Him.
Ask God how you can be an active agent of positive change in our country. Serving the homeless, helping a single mother, thanking our first responders and military men and women, or serving a family in need are great places to start.
- Pray that President Trump will lead our nation well. Pray that he will surround himself with godly men and women and that God would lead him in his decision-making.
- Pray for spiritual renewal and revival in our country.
