Having and Eating Your Cake

Abigail acted quickly. She took two hundred loaves of bread…a hundred cakes of raisins and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.

–1 Samuel 25:18 NIV

Mmmm…cake. Chocolate, carrot, red velvet, coffee, strawberry shortcake, funnel, pineapple upside down, bundt, coconut, and, of course, cheese cake. Is your mouth watering? And what is that old saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?” That may have had its origin back in biblical days as Abigail, the wife of a hard-hearted, very rich man named Nabal who refused to be hospitable to David and his men, loaded up lots of goodies and offered them to David.

Thanks to Abigail’s quick thinking and action, David told her, “May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself…. Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him and said, ‘Go home in peace’…” (1 Samuel 25:33,35 NIV).

When turmoil looms, remember Abigail and her cakes and extend a peace offering to diffuse the situation. God offered humanity Jesus as the Ultimate Peace Offering. May you accept Him fully and gratefully.

Prayer Focus

  • Pray that God will give you good judgment to take action when unpleasant situations arise.
  • Pray that you will take responsibility when God shows you how to diffuse a difficult situation.
