Full, Yet Empty

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

-Matthew 7:9,11 NIV

Have you ever been so sure God forgot about your needs that you provided for yourself, only to regret it later?

When there are legitimate needs that seem to go unfilled, it’s easy to believe if you don’t provide for yourself then you’ll have to “do without.” Instead of having faith in God’s timing, the smallest delays are interpreted as a lack of concern on His part. The tendency is to jump in to fill the gap in a futile effort to reduce the ache in your soul, and you never realize the provision God has prepared is more satisfying…if you will only wait.

Scripture repeatedly warns against filling yourself on the junk food of the world and instead urges you to trust the Lord to fulfill His promise to generously and freely provide good gifts which truly nourish and satisfy.

The next time you feel hunger pains in your soul, resist the temptation to make a rushed decision which will drain your resources and leave you only temporarily satisfied. Be confident in Christ’s promises and draw on His limitless resources to provide the only food that fills the longings of your soul.

Prayer Focus

  • Ask God to help you trust He is at work, even when it seems like nothing is happening.
  • Ask God to help you to wait on, and trust, His provision for your needs.
