Learn From Love

Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self… Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others… -1 Corinthians 13:4-5 MSG

You can learn a lot from love if you are willing to be taught. In how many offenses, especially those committed by people closest to you, are you willing to set aside your hurts and say, “I’m ready to learn what love has to teach me?”

In his teaching, “Every Great Wife,” from the series Every Great Marriage, Jimmy Evans speaks to this. He says that the enemy is photogenic–he’s good at helping you to remember past hurts so you’ll never let them go. Each time somebody hurts you, the past comes back to you. But God is prophetic. He knows that change will take time but if given the right nourishment and environment, it will happen.

You are called to have grace over mercy. Mercy is not giving someone what he or she deserves. Mercy doesn’t allow you to shut somebody out of your life because of one mistake. Grace is giving them what they don’t deserve–pouring out God’s love on them through prayer and nurturing rather than turning your back.

Every time the same person hurts you there’s a desire to build a wall around yourself. Don’t stay in an abusive relationship; God does not want any of His kids harmed, but in safety, pray for that person, for their heart, for their relationships, and for their healing.

That’s not an easy task but God will do something amazing in your life when you do it.

Prayer Focus

  • Pray for those people who have caused pain in your life.
  • Pray that your ability to forgive would increase.
