Mary’s Response

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

–Luke 1:38 ESV

The angel Gabriel, messenger of God, was sent to Mary, a young virgin, engaged to be married. He said, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” (Luke 1:28 NKJV).

Detecting Mary’s alarm and troubled reaction, Gabriel dispels her fear with the truth, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God” (Luke 1:30 NKJV).

Gabriel continues God’s message saying that Mary would conceive and bring forth a Son, not just any son, but Jesus, God’s own Son! (See Luke 1:26-45.)

“But how can I have a baby? I’m a virgin,” Mary asks.

Gabriel explains the plan. Mary responds, “I’m the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Later, Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth, reveals this to her, “You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what He said!”

Because of Mary’s willingness and faith, God blessed her with His favor, and entrusted her with His Son!

Do not be afraid of God’s plan for you. Place your confident trust in God’s Word. Take hold of His promises and boldly say, “I’m willing. I trust You, God. Let it be to me according to Your Word.” Then watch God’s favor accomplish what only He can do.

Prayer Focus

  • Ask for a willing heart to go anywhere, or stay right where you are, and do whatever God asks of you.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to give you promises from the Word to believe and receive and speak over your life.
