He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness.
–Malachi 3:3 NKJV
The following story about the refining process was written by Mary Southerland, a writer at Girlfriends in God.
“The piece of silver selected seemed to already be beautiful, but the silversmith saw something I couldn’t see. The silver, according to the silversmith, had to be placed in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest, so all impurities would be burned away. Comparing your fiery trials to the refining process makes you wonder why would a loving God allow His children to suffer. I learned that the silversmith had to sit and watch the silver in the fire at all times. He cannot take his eyes off the silver, if it is left too long in the flames it will be destroyed.”
She continued, “Your trials are not random persecutions. Where you are and what you are going through is no surprise to God. You may be knocked down and kicked around by life but having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, guarantees you will not be destroyed. How does the silversmith know when the silver is fully refined? It’s complete when he sees his image reflected in the silver.”
