As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God….
–Psalm 42:1-2 NIV84
The psalmist David compares his thirst for God like a deer that pants for streams of water. “Pant” means to long with breathless, intense eagerness; to yearn. To “yearn” means to have an earnest, strong desire. What a marvelous comparison by the psalmist of what it feels like when someone thirsts for the living God; when our hearts yearn and cry out with complete longing and breathless, intense eagerness to be in God’s Holy presence. Psalm 84:2 (NKJV) says, “My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord….”
When we thirst for God’s presence, know that His presence is so powerful and majestic that it will bring us to our knees, awe-struck by His glory. Let us resolve and pray in our hearts this coming New Year that our souls will thirst with all eagerness and yearning for the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Let Jesus become our everything; let us put aside all petty issues and preoccupations; let us start the New Year fresh with holy expectations of living in total and complete consecration to our King Lord Jesus. Hallelujah!
- Holy Spirit, fill us with the desire to give all of ourselves to You this coming year.
- Holy Spirit, mold us with Your loving hands into Your character, so there will be more of You and less of us. Amen.
