Following Christ

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control;  and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ~ 2 Peter 1:5-8 NIV

If you’ve ever put together a puzzle, you know that when you first open the box and dump out all the pieces, it doesn’t look at all like the picture on the front of the box. The more detailed the picture, the more pieces in the puzzle and the more complicated it is to put it together.

Every person who’s ever put together a puzzle has their own strategy as to how to complete the process: some work on the edges, some work on the corners, and some gather like colors. Regardless of the strategy, the desired result is the same: turn many little scattered pieces into a beautiful masterpiece.

God desires to do the same with us. He takes us however and wherever we are when we come to Him and He begins the process of molding and grooming us so that we will be stronger followers of Jesus Christ. First, He begins by encouraging us to increase our faith. Next, He uses examples from His Word to teach us about goodness, moral excellence, and virtue.

Then, as we exercise our goodness through the study of His Word, He helps us to develop knowledge. Our knowledge is increased as we devour His Word and bury His Truths in our hearts and thereby develop self-control. After that, He guides us into developing perseverance which encompasses endurance and patience.

The more we persevere, the more we begin to reflect godliness. The more we reflect godliness, the more we will understand and express mutual affection toward one another. Finally, as our mutual affection grows, the more we will apply and demonstrate God’s love.

Just like puzzles are put together differently with different strategies, God also uses different strategies and different routes as each person and each walk is different but the desired result is the same: raise each person up to be a stronger follower of Christ.

Prayer Focus

  • Which of the things listed above (faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, love) needs to be added to me?
  • How can I walk more closely with Jesus in order to have these things added to me?
