Loving Others

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” ~ John 13:34-35 NLT

Sara had been praying that her new co-worker would be someone with whom she could share faith and friendship. Even though Katie, who was rude and standoffish, was hired, Sara determined to make the best of it.

Every day Sara greeted Katie with a smile, though Katie only grunted. If Katie was having a bad day, Sara would go out of her way to write Katie a note of encouragement. The more Sara went out of her way to love on Katie, the more Sara began to see Katie as Christ saw her: as His treasured one.

At times Katie was still standoffish but showed the utmost respect toward Sara and slowly began to treat others the way that Sara had treated her.

Mother Theresa said, “The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love.”

Jesus has given us all the same commandment: to love each other just as He has loved us. Just as Sara loved Katie by befriending her, encouraging her, and caring for her, we are called to do the same.

Prayer Focus

  • Who do I know that needs me to show them the love of Christ?
  • What simple things can I do to display His love for them?
