Our Relationship with Others: Honoring Your Parents
We are unable to control how others treat us. However, the Lord gives clear directives regarding how we are to treat others; specifically in relationships with our parents. A child is instructed to honor. Exodus 20:12 (ESV) says, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
It’s a commandment not just for the young, but for children of all ages. God reminds us that as long as we have parents, we are to honor them. It’s not just a matter of doing what our parents tell us to do when we are young. It’s a matter of showing life-long honor to the parents who gave us life, raised us, and launched us on life’s journey.
Unfortunately, some of us have not had the joy of being raised by godly parents.
This kind of pain is severe because the relationship between parents and their children is meant to be positive, nurturing and wholesome. Nonetheless, there are many who hurt deeply because of various kinds of parental abuse. However, you can still carry out God’s commandment. It may be difficult, but pray for your parents.
Model Jesus for them. Forgive them. The Lord can help you do this! The Apostle Paul calls this “the first commandment with a promise.” God indicates that when we honor the parents in our lives, He will honor us.
Some parents are easier to honor than others. But respecting those whom the Lord has chosen to place over us opens a door to blessing. By honoring our parents, we honor our Father in heaven.
Thank the Lord for the wisdom and guidance that you have gained from your parents.
Pray that the Lord will help you to honor your parents in ways that are pleasing to Him.
