Joseph—Jesus’ Earthly Father

Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? –Matthew 13:55 NIV

We know very little about Joseph. According to the Bible, Joseph was born circa 100 BC. He was a descendant from King David who kept the laws of Judaism. He was a carpenter in Nazareth and a righteous man who was well respected. God chose Joseph to be the earthly father of Jesus. However, when hearing about Mary’s pregnancy, Joseph didn’t want to expose her to public disgrace or the possibility of being stoned. So, he planned to divorce her quietly. He didn’t seem to believe Mary’s story at first and understand the plan God had for him until an angel appears in a dream telling him not to be afraid to take Mary home as his wife, because the baby was conceived from the Holy Spirit. He immediately accepts his role even in the face of severe humiliation. Joseph had strong convictions and beliefs. He walked in obedience. Joseph may not have known all the details, but he acted in faith. Joseph’s life should strengthen our own faith. Even though little may be known about Joseph, we see a model of character, faith, integrity, and obedience. He certainly was worthy to raise the Son of God.
