“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
–Luke 10:41-42 NIV
The Bible tells us the story of two sisters, Martha and Mary. These sisters, who came from the city of Bethany, loved Jesus. Jesus was coming to their home for dinner, and Martha was anxious and worried. She wanted the dinner to be perfect. At first, the emphasis was on her guest, Jesus, but slowly it shifted to the meal preparation. Martha became upset with her sister because she wanted her help in the kitchen. Mary wanted to sit by Jesus and listen to His words.
Martha asked Jesus to scold Mary for not helping, but Jesus told Martha that Mary was in the right. Martha loved the Lord but her priorities were not His priorities. Her “to do” list was not what Jesus thought was needed.
Make sure your to do list is what Jesus thinks is important. Take time every day to get alone with Him. Sit at His feet in quietness and worship. Read His Word and talk to Him from your heart. You will be amazed at how your stress level will melt away. Follow Mary’s lead. She had the better part. You will be so glad that you did.
- Pray that your busyness does not take you away from time with God.
- True peace is not found in doing but being still in His presence.
