I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. -Psalm 40:1-3 NIV
The Message version of today’s verse says “I waited and waited and waited for God. At last he looked; finally he listened.” Patience isn’t about standing still with no movement at all. Waiting patiently is to rest while looking with great expectation toward a fulfilled promise.
Just like verse 3 says, people are watching. They are watching to see if our God will do what we believe Him to do. They are waiting to see if He will let us down.
Remember that it’s not your reputation on the line, it’s God’s. Isaiah 48:11 (NLT) says, “I will rescue you for my sake—yes, for my own sake! I will not let my reputation be tarnished…”
Several years ago, Pastor Alex Anderson from Bayside Community Church said that “you get what you expect, so you may as well expect good things.” While you are waiting, you can rest assured that as long as you continue to expect God to come through on His promises, He will.
- Thank God that you can trust Him to fulfill His promises.
- Ask God to teach you to live with a heart of praise!
